What does the pH of tap water mean?
pH describes acidity or alkalinity. It is a different measurement from water hardness, which describes calcium and magnesium.
Read pH as its own measurement
pH has its own scale; it is not expressed in mg/l and cannot be converted into hardness. A high hardness result does not supply a missing pH result, and a conductivity or TDS meter cannot replace the relevant test.
Use the report’s reference range
DWI’s published zone-monitoring table gives a pH reference range of 6.5–9.5. Read that alongside the actual report period and sampling context. A number within this range is not an overall drinking-water safety score, and a historical zone mean is not a measurement at your kitchen tap.
If your home test differs
Keep the test instructions, sample time, tap and result. Ask your supplier or laboratory how to investigate a substantial difference. Do not alter household treatment or add chemicals simply to reproduce a value found on a website.
