How to soften hard water: options and practical checks
Start with the problem you want to solve, such as limescale or appliance settings. A hardness label is not a reason to buy treatment for health protection.
Understand what a softener does
An ion-exchange softener replaces calcium and magnesium with sodium. It can reduce scale, but it changes the water’s composition. A device marketed as a filter is not necessarily a hardness softener.
Keep an unsoftened drinking-water supply
DWI advises retaining unsoftened water at the kitchen drinking and cooking tap. Artificially softened water should not be used for baby feeds. Discuss the installation with a qualified plumber and check suitability with your water company.
Include maintenance in the decision
Ask about salt use, servicing, cleaning and the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions. Obtain the supplier’s water report before buying. For a dishwasher, first check whether its built-in softener and recommended salt settings already meet the task.
