Water softener cost: compare purchase, installation and running costs

What a current price example does—and does not—show

On 6 September 2026, Culligan Harvey’s published product facts stated that basic installation packages start at £1,195 including VAT, subject to site survey and pipework complexity. Its quotation guidance says cost depends on the model and installation. This is one supplier’s advertised starting point, not a UK average, a guaranteed quote or a recommendation.

Ask for an itemised quote

Ask whether the quoted total includes the unit, installation, VAT, necessary pipework, bypass and an unsoftened drinking-water outlet. Ask about warranty exclusions, call-outs, servicing and removal. For a payment agreement, compare the total payable and fees as well as the monthly amount.

Calculate ongoing costs using your own inputs

Annual running cost equals salt used per year multiplied by delivered salt price, plus regeneration water and wastewater charges, servicing and any electricity. Use your tariff and the proposed model’s consumption information. Do not count marketing savings as guaranteed offsets.

An illustrative five-year calculation

Suppose an installed quote is £1,500, salt is £90 per year, extra metered water is £25 per year and servicing is £60 per year. Five years would cost £2,375 before financing, repairs and inflation: £1,500 + 5 × (£90 + £25 + £60). These are invented example inputs to demonstrate the calculation, not market prices or savings estimates.
