Shower filters for hard water: what they can and can’t do

Most shower filters are designed to reduce chlorine, not hardness. Removing calcium and magnesium needs a water softener or reverse osmosis. If your area has soft water, a hardness product will not help, so check your published hardness first. WaterGrade does not recommend or sell products; this guide explains how to judge a claim.

What removes hardness

DWI’s guidance on home treatment links hardness removal to water softeners and reverse osmosis, and taste and odour removal to activated carbon filters. A household ion-exchange softener swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium in a bed of resin, then regenerates that resin with salt. A reverse osmosis unit removes most dissolved solids but is normally fitted for drinking water, not a shower.

Why a shower cartridge struggles

Showers use a lot of water. As an illustration, an eight-minute shower at 8 litres a minute uses 64 litres. At a very hard 300 mg/l as calcium carbonate, that water carries about 19 grams of hardness, expressed as calcium carbonate, every shower (64 × 300 mg). A small cartridge that is never regenerated would have to capture that amount every day. Unless a manufacturer publishes a tested hardness reduction and capacity, do not assume a shower filter softens water.

What shower filters are usually tested for

Shower filter cartridges commonly contain media such as carbon, KDF (a copper-zinc material) or vitamin C, which are marketed mainly at chlorine. NSF/ANSI 177 is the standard for shower filtration systems. In NSF’s public listing of shower filters certified to it, checked on 11 September 2026, every certified claim was free available chlorine reduction and none was hardness reduction. A certification mark tells you what was tested, so read which claim it supports.

What they may help with

If the chlorine smell of your water bothers you, a filter tested for chlorine reduction may help with that. Some people prefer how their hair or skin feels after changing their shower set-up, but that is a personal preference, not evidence that hardness has fallen. Questions to ask before buying

Ask the seller for evidence you can check:

  • Which substance does it reduce: chlorine, total hardness or something else?
  • By how much, at what flow rate and water temperature?
  • For how many litres, and how will you know when the cartridge is exhausted?
  • Was it tested by an independent body, and to which standard?
  • Does the fitting comply with the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999? DWI says such products must meet UK water fittings rules (regulation 4) and be able to show compliance, for example through UK certification.

Tackling limescale on the shower itself

Descaling the shower head with citric acid, wiping it after use and squeegeeing glass screens deal with visible scale directly. If you want softer water throughout the home, compare a whole-house softener with its installation and running costs, and keep an unsoftened drinking-water tap as DWI advises.

Check how hard your water is first

If your area has soft water, a hardness product will not help. Look up your supplier’s published figure, check its reporting period and units, and convert it if needed.
